On 02 February 2010 the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) hosted a well attended workshop on the electricity supply challenges facing South Africa. The Hon. Peters, Minister of Energy addressed the gathering that sought solutions to the energy supply problems. She advised delegates that inputs from the private sector on the draft of the revised Integrated Resource Plan (IRP2) would be invited later this year. Many recommendations were made by key stakeholders ranging from interventions that can be made to reduce residential consumption, the introduction of private participation in generation and the separation of generation and transmission. Attention was also given to the benefits that could accrue to the continent by developing the Southern African grid through the Southern African Power Pool. Several delegates referred to the need to address the energy mix, where specific attention should be paid to renewable sources such as solar, wind and hydro generation. In the weeks to come SACCI will convene a working group that will include representation from Eskom to scrutinise the proposals made with a view to developing recommendations to resolve the pressing need for reliable, sustainable and affordable energy for the country. The outcomes of the working group’s deliberations will be presented to NERSA, the Ministries of Energy and Public Enterprises and to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Energy for their consideration.
