SACCI WELCOMES INVESTIGATION INTO THE ARMS DEAL In a statement issued today, the President of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (SACCI), Mr Chose Choeu, said: Quote: The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) welcomes the decision taken by President Zuma to appoint a commission of enquiry to investigate allegations of wrongdoing in the arms deal. Although the matter was the subject of a legal process, SACCI believes that public debate and speculation on the arms deal has attracted adverse publicity. The arms deal has become a metaphor for the misappropriation of funds, bribery and corruption broadly. SACCI agrees with President Zuma that closure on this subject will be in the public interest. SACCI further believes that closure will also be in the national economic interest.
SACCI trusts that the terms of reference, the composition of the commission and timeframes will be announced in the near future. SACCI appeals for the commission to conduct its investigations in an open and transparent manner and to produce recommendations that will put to rest the speculation surrounding the issue.
