PROPOSED BAN: ADVERTISING OF ALCOHOL
In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr Neren Rau, said: QUOTE: The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) is concerned by reports that it is intended to ban alcohol advertising. SACCI believes that the banning of advertising increases state intervention in legitimate business operations but may not deliver the anticipated tangible benefits. While there have been conflicting research findings, cognisance must be taken of the fact that advertising is but only one of a number of factors that influence the consumption of alcohol, such as peer pressure, parent examples, culture and illegal sales to underage persons. Significant research has also shown that consumption of alcohol has not dropped significantly as a result of a ban on advertising.

SACCI COPPER THEFT BAROMETER: APRIL 2013
The Copper Theft Barometer decreased marginally to a level of R9.9 million in April from R10 million in March and R11.2 million in February. The overall downward momentum seen in 2012 continues into 2013 with some occasional increases along the way. The monthly average for the year to date for the Barometer was $10.5 million, compared to the 2012 average of $19.8 million.

SACCI CONCERNED OVER WEAKENING LABOUR MARKET
In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr. Neren Rau, said: QUOTE: The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) is concerned over the 36.7% broad unemployment rate recorded for the first quarter of 2013. The number of unemployed persons and discouraged work seekers increased by 173 000 over the past quarter. This in itself serves as powerful warning that the current culture of knee-jerk industrial action and the increased rigidity of labour regulations stifles employment creation and in turn threatens the stability of the economy.

SACCI COPPER THEFT BAROMETER:MARCH 2013
The Copper Theft Barometer decreased to a level of R10 million in March from R11.2 million in February 2013. The downward momentum seen in 2012 continues into 2013 with some occasional, minor increases along the way. The average monthly figure for the Barometer in 2012 was $19.8 million, so there were exceptional, albeit gradual, improvements in the Barometer over the past year. The Copper Theft Volume Indicator fell to a level of 142 metric tons in March after reading 153 tons in February.
