Surge in Trade Conditions

Trade conditions improved faster than anticipated in April 2013 to a level last measured in March 2012. This strong increase is partly explained by the long weekend shifting to March from April in 2013. New vehicle sales also exhibited a sudden robust increase in April 2013 sales figures.

The Trade Activity Index (TAI) jumped by 5 points from 51 in February to 56 in March 2013 and again by 5 points to 61 in April 2013. The seasonally adjusted TAI, however, improved by 11 index points to 65 in April 2013 from 54 in March 2013 which indicates that the surge went beyond seasonal factors and the long-term trade survey trend.

SACCI Business Confidence Index

1. Introduction

The Business Confidence Index (BCI) of SACCI (South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry) reflects the business climate that is market-related and accounts for economic developments that has a bearing on the business mood in South Africa. The SACCI BCI therefore does not reflect what business is saying, but what they are doing and experiencing.

It is likely that the business mood will be influenced both positively and negatively by various developments in markets and the economy. The BCI seeks to reflect the net results of these influences.

SACCI CONCERNED OVER WEAKENING LABOUR MARKET

In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr. Neren Rau, said: QUOTE: The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) is concerned over the 36.7% broad unemployment rate recorded for the first quarter of 2013. The number of unemployed persons and discouraged work seekers increased by 173 000 over the past quarter. This in itself serves as powerful warning that the current culture of knee-jerk industrial action and the increased rigidity of labour regulations stifles employment creation and in turn threatens the stability of the economy.

SACCI COPPER THEFT BAROMETER:MARCH 2013

The Copper Theft Barometer decreased to a level of R10 million in March from R11.2 million in February 2013. The downward momentum seen in 2012 continues into 2013 with some occasional, minor increases along the way. The average monthly figure for the Barometer in 2012 was $19.8 million, so there were exceptional, albeit gradual, improvements in the Barometer over the past year. The Copper Theft Volume Indicator fell to a level of 142 metric tons in March after reading 153 tons in February.
